Traineeship Programme in Lifeguarding and Swimming Assistant

Delivered in partnership between Creative Sport & Leisure Ltd, University of Hertfordshire Sports Village, The Royal Life Saving Society UK and Institute of Swimming

Overview

This 12 week traineeship programme is for anyone aged 16 to 24 wanting to pursue a career in the leisure industry. If your enthusiastic about becoming a lifeguard or a swimming teacher then this traineeship will give you the kickstart to a career in the industry. On the programme you will develop your lifeguard and swim teaching skills, gain valuable work experience, improve your employability, maths and English skills.

What qualifications will I study?

As part of the programme you will complete the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 National Pool Lifeguard Qualification
  • SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching)
  • Award in the Principles of Leading an Active,
    Healthy Life (EL3)
  • Functional Skills in both English & Maths
  • Employability Skills
  • Safeguarding
  • Basic Training on Learn to Swim Database

    What will a typical week involve?

    Your week will be made up of two days of learning at Hertfordshire Sports Village, where you will spend one day working towards your Lifeguard and Swimming Assistant qualification and then move onto your Award in the Principles of Leading an Active, Healthy Life. The second day will be spent improving your employability skills and working towards a maths and English qualification.

    You will also complete 3 days of work experience where uniform will be provided by Hertfordshire Sports Village, these duties will include:

    • Complete relevant health, safety and cleanliness checks, complete paperwork and act upon findings in accordance with normal operating procedures
    • Keep up to date with changes and developments across the centre
    • Assist with the preparation and delivery of all bookings and events poolside, dry side and outdoors and ensure all aspects of student sport are delivered at the highest level possible to ensure service excellence
    • Attend training sessions as detailed in emergency and operating procedures
    • Carry out the supervision of the pool and all associated tasks in a professional manner including water quality tests and change in pool set-up as per emergency and operating procedures
      Assisting with the poolside set up for swimming lessons
    • Greeting swimmers and parents/guardians and directing them to their relevant classes
    • Taking registers on electronic tablets
    • Assisting the swim teachers with delivery of lessons either in the water or from the side
    • Calming children/adults that maybe nervous about attending lessons or leaving their parents
    • Completing equipment inventories, replenishing lesson stock: hats and certificates and tidying swimming aids
      Follow safeguarding protocol

      Who is eligible for the programme?

      • You must be aged 16-24 or up to 25 if you have an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP)
      • You must not be qualified at L4 or above
      • You are not currently in full-time employment or funded education and have little work experience, but are focused on work or the prospect of it
      • Live in England
      • UK or EU citizen for 3 years or more

      Are there any other entry requirements?

      • No experience required
      • Must be reliable and punctual
      • Ability to work on your own as well as in a team
      • A good work ethic with a willingness to learn
      • Good listening and communication skills
      • A passion for swimming and ability to swim competently
      • Approachable and a focus on customer care
      • Outgoing personality able to interact with and engage with people of all ages
      • Good timekeeping skills are essential

      What are my progression opportunities?

      Upon successful completion you will be offered a chance to apply as a Swim Teacher and or a Lifeguard/Sports Assistant. There may also be an opportunity to progress onto a leisure apprenticeship program which could then lead to further employment opportunities.

      Throughout the duration of your traineeship programme there maybe an opportunity to work additional paid hours as a Sports/Assistant Lifeguard or assist with swimming lessons once you’ve achieved your SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) qualification.

      *Trainees can earn up to £30 a week for the duration of the programme to cover travel expenses.
